Electrodissolution-driven enhancement in Zn electrode reversibility

The irreversible electrochemical dissolution and deposition behavior of zinc electrodes in aqueous zinc-based batteries during long-term cycling leads to uncontrollable dendrite growth. Unlike lithium-ion batteries, the initial operating step of aqueous zinc-based batteries is the discharge process, that is, the zinc electrode first undergoes electrodissolution reaction rather than electrodeposition. However, most existing studies focus on the electrodeposition behavior of zinc, while the electrodissolution characteristics have been ignored. This work comprehensively reveals the electrodissolution mechanism of zinc electrodes and provides new ideas for improving the reversibility of zinc electrodes.
